Styling for your hair type. Find out what styles work best for your hair type, texture & more.
We like to believe almost anything is possible with a can-do attitude. Unfortunately, when it comes to hairstyles, there are some that just aren’t likely to work with your hair type. It might just be a question of changing the length (easy enough!) or it might mean working against your natural hair texture. Before you go borrowing your girlfriend’s straightening iron, let’s talk about natural hair types, textures, and what styles work best for them.
HAIR TEXTURE
Rather than referring to how hair feels, texture actually refers to the circumference of each hair. Think of a wispy baby’s hair vs the thick, pokey hair of your beard. There are 3 hair textures, which we’ll explain below. But it’s important to note that these hair textures do not refer to how much hair you actually have on your head, it’s just how thick each hair is.
FINE HAIR- Doesn’t hold styles easily
- Easily weighed down with heavy products, causing the hair to look stringy
- Can look thin in nature.
- Can be hard to build up volume
- Is fragile and can break easily with rough towel drying or brushing. We recommend always use a heat protecting pre styler.
- Should use light pre and post stylers like Volume Cream and Matte Cream Clay.
- Use hair care items like Hydrating Hair Oil sparingly. Less is more!
- The most common hair type
- Holds styles fairly easily
- Usually looks thick and covers the scalp well
- Is not as prone to breakage as fine hair.
- Can use any BLUMAAN product, focusing more on the desired style and hair type per below.
- Appears full
- Holds styles well
- Can tolerate higher amounts of heat
- Should use heavier pre and post styling products like Heavy Hold Clay or Hydrating Pomade.
HAIR TYPES
Now that we have texture out of the way, let’s talk hair type. It’s important for understanding what type of hairstyle you can achieve, and what products you need to help.
Straight Hair
When your hair has no hint of a curl, it means you don’t need to worry about frizz. That means there’s a lot you can do! Think quiffs for short-medium hair or slick backs for longer hair. Generally, you can use any of our BluMaan products as long as you’re paying attention to your hair texture.
For example, someone with fine, straight hair can add volume when they use light prestyler product like Volume Cream instead of a heavy matte clay. Even a slickback is possible if you ensure that you start with a small amount of product and build up. Slight, beachy waves can be added to longer-length straight hair with products like Texture Sea Salt Spray.
Wavy Hair
Similar to straight hair, you can get away with a lot of different products or styles. Even with fine waves, you have a natural look of volume with long or shorter hair. With a little bit of coaxing (and Texture Sea Salt Spray) you can rock a sharp mid fade and wavy textured top as well. If you’re prone to frizz, try Hydrating Hair Oil on clean, damp hair before using a blow dryer.
Curly Hair
Curls might feel like they take a lot of work, but don't forget it's not a curse! From a sharp and stylish Sharp Mid Fade and Curly Textured Top to the more dynamic mid-length curly look, your only real limit is finding a barber who really understands your hair.
They’ll be able to give you the right kind of cut, and walk you through how best to blow dry so that you can play up your natural curl shape, and avoid frizz. (Hint: Ditch the fine tooth comb and pick up Hydrating Hair Oil and a diffuser for your blow dryer. Your curls will thank us!)
Coily Hair
With coily hair, your curl pattern (whether hairs make a tight Z or loose S shape) will determine what styles are within reach. Whether you’re rocking starter locs or a high fade (or both at once) your style priority, besides looking good, is maintaining hair health. Even protective styles like braids can cause tension that will damage the more fragile hairs on your head.
If you’re wearing your hair out and natural, we recommend Hydrating Hair Oil both because it can help maintain a smooth coil shape, and because its blend of 12 natural oils and botanical extracts is aimed at making hair feel softer and healthier. Also it can help with any troubling frizz that may appear.
